Liverpool's agreement with Newcastle for Alexander Isak for £125 million has enabled Elliott to leave after six years at Anfield. Earlier in the window, he was subject to interest from RB Leipzig with the Reds seeking £40 million plus a buy-back option. Elliott was keen on remaining in the Premier League and so a move never materialised.
Villa's quiet summer is set to end with a flurry of incomings, following Jadon Sancho's potential loan move and Victor Lindelof signing on a free transfer. Unai Emery has been targeting attacking reinforcements in the No 10 position, with Marco Asensio and Lucas Paqueta both linked with moves to Villa Park. It now looks like that pursuit will end with Harvey Elliott in a Villa shirt.
Young Talent with Experience
Despite being only 22-years-old, Elliott has racked up 147 appearances for Liverpool since joining their academy from Fulham in 2019 in a £4.3 million deal. He's largely been utilised as a squad player throughout his career, with the 23/24 season his best. Elliott made 53 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and assisting eleven times. He's won six trophies over the course of his Liverpool career.
In this summer's U-21 Euros Championship, Elliott was named Player of the Tournament, where he scored six goals. England secured back-to-back titles with a win over Germany back in June.
Where does he fit in for Villa?
So far this season, Villa have been atrocious with no player really shining much light. With changes needed, Elliott could very quickly slot into the No 10 just behind Ollie Watkins or even play on the right-wing. When Villa have faced teams playing a low-block, like they did last night against Crystal Palace, they have lacked creativity. Last season, Villa had been in need of a player that could breakdown a team's defence when controlling possession, until they signed Marco Asensio on loan in January. The Spaniard showcased that numerous times last season. Elliott's energy and talent means he can become that player and it's certainly what Villa needs.
A permanent deal next summer for £30-£35 million could be great value for Elliott who could continue to develop into a fantastic player. Unai Emery's track record of growing young talent and improving players could be what Elliott needs to take the next step in his career.
