Victor Boniface’s move to AC Milan collapses after medical failure

The transfer of Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface to AC Milan has broken down after the Nigerian failed his medical.

Medical Concerns End Deal

Milan’s medical staff conducted four separate examinations and ultimately raised serious doubts about the 24-year-old’s fitness. Boniface has previously suffered two cruciate ligament tears, which heavily influenced the decision.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes confirmed to BILD that the move is no longer an option. “When he comes back, the Milan issue will be over. That’s no big secret,” Rolfes said on Sunday.

Boniface had traveled to Milan on Friday with plans to sign on loan for one year, with AC Milan holding a €24 million purchase option after paying a €5 million loan fee. The total deal was set at €29 million, with all terms agreed between the clubs before the collapse.

No Futher Renegotiations Planned

After Milan’s 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Cremonese, speculation arose in Italy about a potential renegotiation. Rolfes dismissed this outright:
“I don’t think that’s going to happen,” he stated.

Boniface spent his vacation training with a personal coach in hopes of regaining full fitness, but setbacks persisted throughout preseason.
“His condition has improved compared to the beginning. Boniface needs to continue to build up. We believe he can make progress. But he has to take those steps,” Rolfes explained.

Future at Leverkusen Uncertain

Boniface’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen runs until 2028. However, his place in the squad is under question, as he currently ranks behind Patrik Schick (29) and new signing Christian Kofane (19) in the striker pecking order.
